In consultation with our customers, we are using the MT system from Lucy Software - a system that can provide us with the following benefits:

Cost and Time Savings

Example: At the end of 2009, we translated approximately 300,000 words from English into German for one customer and we were able to grant a discount of 20% for the sections of the text that were pre-translated using MT and that were brought to a "human standard" by translators, without having had the time to optimize the process.

How do we achieve this?

We link the MT system with a translation memory so that our translators can work as usual and we receive the (pre-)translations that are delivered from the MT system as templates for post-processing, unless the TM provides a good proposal.

In addition, this helps us to prevent unprocessed, and therefore unwanted, machine translations from being saved in the memory.

In other words, we build an optimal work environment that enables us to then pass on any cost benefits to our customers.

The work effort connected with this method is, of course, only worthwhile when translating text quantities that are sufficiently large. In our opinion, machine translation is only promising as a customer-specific solution but, when used correctly, it can lead to significant savings.

Translatability

Another use for MT lies in the translation of mass documents that are not normally translated because the sheer quantity of these documents exceeds any budget, because they change too frequently or because they are only meant for internal use.

In this case, we can use MT to provide raw translations that, in most cases, are "good enough" and/or can be used as the basis for decision-making about whether certain contents are important MT-Eule enough, in order to justify the costs required for a high-quality translation.
